“I have nothing now, (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan took everything, my right to freedom, expression and work” ..

It could be the words of a political fighter or a token citizen, but it is the words of Turkey’s top scorer and its living football legend, Hakan Shukor.

Shukur is the owner of the fastest goals in the World Cup in his history, after he scored after 11 seconds against South Korea in the third place match in the 2002 World Cup, paving the way for the greatest Turkish achievement in football, but now he works as a driver for Uber in America.

The story of Shukor started since his dispute with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, where the Turkish football legend resigned from the ruling Justice and Development Party in 2013, two years after entering parliament as a member of the party.

And that resignation caused the bad relationship between Erdogan and Shukur, as the Turkish football legend was accused of participating in the coup that was aspiring to overthrow Erdogan, amid accusations by the Turkish authority of Shukur of belonging to the movement led by dissident Fethullah Kulen.

In 2015, Shukor fled to the United States and built a coffee shop in California.

“I have nothing now, (Erdogan) Erdogan took everything, my right to freedom, expression and action, no one can explain my role in this coup, I did nothing, I am not a traitor or a terrorist,” Schocker told the German newspaper, “Welt am Sonntag”.

“I may be an enemy of the government in Turkey, but I am not an enemy of my country, I love Turkey,” Shukor continued.

“After my resignation, I started receiving threats, my wife’s workplace was attacked and they harassed my children and imprisoned my father and kept my property, so I came to America and opened a cafe but strangers came and harassed us,” Shukor recalls.

“Now I drive for Uber, and I sell books,” Shukor concluded.
