Foreign: The Washington Statement included the main determinants of the final agreement on the Renaissance Dam and the rules governing the filling process

On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, the meetings held in Washington for the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Water Resources of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia chaired by the US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin concluded in the presence of the President of the World Bank. The meeting issued a final statement that includes the agreement of the three countries to hold a ministerial meeting in Washington during the period 28- January 29, 2020 to reach a comprehensive agreement on the rules for filling and operating the Renaissance Dam, provided that the ministerial meeting is preceded by consultations between technical and legal experts in the three countries with the participation of representatives of the United States and the World Bank to prepare for the next ministerial meeting to be held in J Washington.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez stated that the final statement issued by the Washington meeting included the main elements and determinants of the final agreement on the Renaissance Dam, which include the rules regulating the filling and operation of the dam, as well as the procedures to be followed to deal with droughts and protracted droughts, so as to ensure not to harm water interests Egyptian. The ministers also agreed that the final agreement includes a mechanism for coordination between the three countries to follow up on the implementation of the agreement, in addition to a mechanism for resolving disputes.The Spokesman stated that the Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, expressed his appreciation to the US Treasury Secretary for his chairmanship and sponsorship of the meetings, as well as the effort made by his associate team to bring the views of the three countries closer.

The Foreign Minister expressed Egypt’s intention to continue working to conclude a final agreement on the Renaissance Dam during the next Washington meeting, which is characterized by balance and justice, and secures the common interests of the three countries and preserves Egypt’s rights and water interests.
