French President Emmanuel Macron said that France will deploy the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its associated combat group from January to April to support French military operations in the Middle East.

“The aircraft carrier will support Chamal’s operations (in the Middle East) from January to April 2020 before it is deployed to the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea,” Macron said in an army address.

This comes amid increasing tension between Iran and the United States and France’s concerns that the battle against ISIS may lose its momentum in this context.

Last December, a spokeswoman for the French armed forces said that a European operation to ensure the security of maritime navigation in the Gulf region would be launched next month when a French warship begins patrolling there. The French government has pushed to find a European security alternative in the Strait of Hormuz after excluding participation in a US-led coalition to protect oil tankers and cargo ships from the Iranian threat.

Brigadier-General Ann Cecil Ortiman, the deputy spokesperson for the armed forces, said that the frigate “Corbett” would participate in the European Maritime Security Initiative from the beginning of next year, according to Reuters.
