Scientists extracted two blocks of ice from an ancient glacier, and found a group of 33 pathogens frozen in the interior, of which 28 were unprecedented in human history, where unknown ancient viruses dating back 15,000 years old lurking in prehistoric ice on Tibetan Plateau, researchers say global warming threatens to melt glaciers in the world, and that under the “worst-case scenario”, viruses can be released into the atmosphere.
According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, the high temperatures have the ability to collect viruses collectively into a world that has no immunity to it, and the effectiveness of these viruses is unknown, as some of them are potentially deadly and potentially harmless.
A five-year project allowed them to make sure that they were discovering ancient viruses and not just catching contamination from the modern world, and the upper layer of ice (0.5 cm) was removed with a technology that guaranteed it was pollution free, they tested their procedures on artificial ice hearts before applying them to two glaciers In the study.
The team of academics also entered genetic techniques and microbiology to record all types of DNA in the ice core they got.
“The glacier contains various microbes, but the associated viruses and their effects on ice microbes have not been explored,” the researchers wrote in their paper, published online in bioRxiv.
Although researchers have refused to comment on their research because it has not yet been fully completed, they write that there is great interest in studying extinction viruses stored in glaciers.
