I wrote – Yasmine Al-Sharqawi:

Today marks the 128th anniversary of the birth of the mighty artist Syed Darwish, one of the giants of the era of beautiful art, who managed to make a breakthrough in the world of Arab music, to become one of the most important Arab musicians.

Sheikh Sayyid, as his fans call him, died in his thirties, but his life was not without adventures and tales. We review the most prominent of them in the following lines:

“Sheikh Sayed” was born on March 17, 1892 in Alexandria Governorate.

He learned to improve the Qur’an in “Shams al-Maarif”, and then unleashed his talent for singing in a number of public places, until he became one of the most famous composers of Alexandria.

– Some people close to him advised him to come to Cairo in order to achieve a wider reputation, and he started composing a number of theatrical troupes with Imad Al-Din, such as: “Naguib Al-Rihani, George Abiad, Ali Al-Kassar.”

He presented many songs that are present to this day, such as: “I am Hoyt, light-hearted, I am the Egyptian, tightening the belt, Al-Helwa D, or this one, and they visited me every year once, and the national anthem of my country.”

In September 1923, he died at the age of 31.

– In 2017, the Public Prosecutor received a communication under No. (14965 of 2017) demanding the exhumation of the remains of Sayed Darwish from his burial to take samples from the parts that have not been decomposed, in order to determine the cause of death due to a criminal suspicion, according to the communication.
