Kamal Darwish, former Zamalek president, was surprised by the claim of former Al Ahly coach Joe Bonfrear that the country wanted to crown the first in the Egyptian Premier League in the 2002-2003 season.

The Dutch coach who led Al-Ahly in that season claimed that higher instructions came to the team in order to lose the championship in the last 3 rounds. (See what he said)

“Words that cannot be said, cannot be believed, and cannot be preoccupied with,” he continued.

“Who will tell a club official to lose your matches so that your opponent will crown the tournament they are fighting for?”

“I think it is fun and ironic to go ahead and talk about this,” he said.

Issam El-Hadary, the guard of Al-Ahly at the time, also denounced Bonfrear’s statements. (the details)

Al-Ahly needed a goal to force Zamalek a playoff, and two goals to crown the league, but lost in the last round to Enppi in a loud surprise to lose the title to its traditional rivals.
