An Indian police official said an investigation was opened into allegations of a woman being gang-raped in a school in the desert state of Rajasthan after she was isolated alone for one night as part of the general isolation measures applied in the country due to the Coronavirus.
The accident occurred last week when the victim, who was working with a daily wage, asked for shelter in a police station, after she had traveled several kilometers, during which she lost the road to her village.
Because of the lack of an isolation center, the police provided her with shelter in a school building overnight, where she claimed that three men raped her.
“The three men who raped the woman inside the school on April 23 were arrested and placed in prison,” Barth Sharma, deputy chief of police in the district of Sawal Madhopur in Rajasthan state who is investigating the case, told Reuters.
The victim reported to the police that she had been walking for days from Saul Madhopur before reaching the village where she was raped.
Sharma said the woman had been sent to a local health isolation facility for testing, for fear of infection with Covid-19 disease, caused by the Coronavirus.
The general closure measures announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month to contain the outbreak prompted tens of thousands of people who lost their jobs in cities to walk days to reach their villages. Many are now in overcrowded isolation centers, where the authorities are trying to overcome the health crisis.
India, with a population of 1.3 billion, reported 26,496 cases of corona and 824 deaths.
Federal data indicate that an average rape occurs every 20 minutes in India despite the strict laws in force in the country.
