Al-Rasheed expected the collapse of the Renaissance Dam due to the potential major flood, indicating that the design flood of the Sudanese Sennar Dam represents 15 thousand cubic meters per second, while it hits the Renaissance by 38 thousand meters per second, according to the Russian “Sputnik” agency.
He explained that this means reducing the potential safety factor by more than 61%, adding that the drawings related to the Renaissance Dam show the lower exits 565 meters above sea level, and the entrance to the turbines 560 meters, indicating that this is a serious design defect.
The agency pointed out that the Quraysh expectations come within a study entitled “The risks of the collapse of the Renaissance Dam … between the state of denial, the facts, scientific and hydraulic proofs, and hydro-geo-morphology … stable and clear”,
The study confirmed that the safety rates of the Renaissance Dam are low and affect its future.
The Sudanese expert indicated that the design of the Renaissance Dam will not protect Sudan from flood-bearing floods, expecting the dam to collapse due to unsafe water outlets.
She explained that the minimum operating limit to ensure the operation of the turbines requires study.
Quraish found that there are many faults that threaten the integrity of the dam, such as the location, the lack of lower control gates, and the lack of adherence to the ICRC’s recommendations in the additions of the lower control gates, stressing that the loads cannot be accurately estimated, including silt and earthquakes.
Quraysh noted many violations, such as the failure of the Ethiopian Electric Power Company to launch the dam project in a global tender, explaining that it had agreed to a model prepared in the absence of oversight and consultant engineers, and this is in violation of international standards for contracts.
And Quraish counted the rest of the mistakes, such as insisting that the project be completed in 5 years, even though the power station needs between 8 and 15 years, stressing that this was a planning error, referring to previous incidents of the “Salini” company that led to the collapse of small dams in Ethiopia.
The Sudanese expert added that the most important studies such as the socio-economic feasibility study, the dam safety study, environmental studies, and the scale of the evaporation scale were not conducted, in addition to the lack of a study of the prediction of silt on the dam that could cause its collapse.
The Quraysh indicated the absence of studies such as mucus analysis and the possible collapse of the dam and the lack of an Ethiopian study of the reasons for the failure and breakdown of dams of other countries, stressing the collapse of a number of dams for similar reasons, as happened in the Kariba Dam, between Zambia and Zimbabwe, where it became threatened with collapse due to sealing of silt and allowing pure water to flow .
The Sudanese expert stressed that Ethiopia is violating the 1902 treaty, and does not recognize it now, noting that it does not adhere to the 2015 agreement on not starting to fill without agreeing with the downstream countries, calling on the Sovereign Defense Council in Sudan to take action to protect the security of the country, and called for a complaint to the United Nations in accordance with the law International.
