“I am delighted to have joined Manchester City’s technical staff,” said 54-year-old Spaniard Liu after taking over.
“My relationship with Pep goes back many years, and I am excited to work with him on this wonderful team,” he added on the club’s official website.
He concluded: “Manchester City has achieved great successes over the past years and plays beautiful football.”
The assistant position has been vacant in Manchester City since the departure of Michael Arteta to train Arsenal earlier in the season.
Who is Leo?
Liu supervised Guardiolas 6-month training in 2006 for the Dorados Sinaola team in Mexico, and contributed greatly to putting the last stone of Pep’s soccer career before he turned to the coaching world.
Leo is one of the philosophers of the all-out attacking ball, and shares his thoughts with his student Guardiola.
Leo did not train major teams in his career, as his most prominent stations were the company of Zaragoza, Real Sociedad and Almeria.
Liu also worked as an assistant to Jorge Sampaoli in training for Chile and Seville between 2015 and 2017.
The last of Liu’s training stations was with the Chinese Jingado Huanghai, who broke up earlier this year.
In a 2012 interview, Liu said he considered Guardiola his son.
Manchester City are second in the English Premier League with 57 points, behind Liverpool, the 82-point leader in first place.
