The semi-official Iranian Student News Agency quoted Transport Minister Mohammad Islami as saying on Friday that Tehran had submitted a formal complaint to the International Civil Aviation Organization and described the incident, as “yesterday, as a terrorist and aggressive act”.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the confrontation may be linked to the upcoming US presidential elections, according to official media reports.

He added: “Iran will not let any hostile step against it pass without reckoning and will respond decisively and appropriately to any irrational step at the appropriate time.”

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the United States of risking a civil plane disaster.

And Zarif wrote on Twitter: “The United States has molested a civilian passenger plane on a regular flight, which endangered innocent civilian passengers by claiming to protect its occupying forces … These extra-legal acts must be ended before a disaster occurs.”
