An amazing study revealed that a small group of people with HIV, called the “controlling elite”, have the ability to recover without any medical help.
And many previous studies, conducted over several years, found that a very small number of 38 million people infected with the dreaded virus were able to suppress it without any treatment.
The new study found that a small subset of the “controlling elite” appears to be able to eliminate HIV from their bodies completely, without taking the drug at all.
This discovery is astonishing given that HIV infection lasts for life, and there is no medical treatment for it. In the vast majority of cases, those affected require daily antiretroviral (ART) treatment to control the virus and stop the progression of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Veteran HIV researcher Keith Hootes, director of the hematology and resource department at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, explained: “What happens with these individuals, whom we call the controlling elite, may shed light on HIV-1 treatment and also help us understand. How can a person with HIV control the virus and avoid HIV-related comorbidities.
In the new study, experts from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology studied more than 1,500 “power elites.” And they discovered that these people achieved the results of getting rid of the virus, which had not been seen before until after years of intensive medical treatment.
The authors say the “controlling elite” is the closest to a potential “natural cure” for the virus, which has killed more than 33 million people since its emergence in the early 1980s.
