The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said that the number of elderly people in Egypt reached about 7 million, 7.1% of the total population last January, and this percentage is expected to rise to 17.9% in 2052.
The agency stated that the number of elderly males amounted to about 3.5 million, or 6.9% of the total male population, while the number of elderly females reached 3.5 million, or 7.3% of the total female population.
The report indicated that the expectation for survival increased from 73.9 years in 2019 to 74.3 years in 2020
The agency monitored the extent of illiteracy among the elderly, whose percentage was about 56.5% in 2019, of whom (43.8% are males, 70.6% are females).
The percentage of the elderly who have a university degree and above increased from 8.9% in 2018 to 10.3% in 2019, while the number of employed elderly reached 1.1 million elderly, representing 16.5% of the total elderly.
The statistics agency said that the highest percentage of elderly workers were in the agricultural and fishing activity at 50.5%, then workers in the wholesale and retail trade activity by 18.6%, and the lowest percentage 1.2% was for workers in scientific activities.
Marriage contracts between the elderly accounted for 2.2% of the total contracts, while the percentage of divorce certificates was 9% of the total divorce certificates.
The agency said that the number of elderly care institutions reached 156 in 2019 nationwide, while the number of their beneficiaries reached 3412.
The percentage of smoking among the elderly increased from 12.5% in 2015 to 16.6% in 2017/2018.
