Fayoum – Hussein Fathy:

47 years have passed since the glorious October War, but it still infuses Egyptians with a spirit of optimism and hope, as it carries stories of heroism written by the heroes of the armed forces during that period.

“Masrawy” met Major General Sayed Ali Heikal, son of the village of Al-Gharq, affiliated to the Etsa Center in the Fayoum Governorate, who held the position of Director of the Military Records Department, one of the heroes of the October War, to narrate the heroics of the Egyptian armed forces.

Major General Haykal says: “I graduated from the War College in February 1964 and traveled to Yemen 6 months later, then returned to Egypt in August 1966.”

He added, “I participated in the 1967 war as part of the infantry forces of the Second Army, and I was captured by the Israeli occupation army. They took me to Israel and stayed there for about 9 months.

He continued: “After my return from captivity, and while preparing for the October war, leaders from the army came to us and we were a group of prisoners, asking us to be in the back rows at the time of the battle, which we strongly refused, insisting on participating in the war in the front lines, and we signed declarations. Thus, because the Geneva Convention Concerning Prisoners provides for the execution of a prisoner of war if he is captured twice, which was what the army commanders feared at that time.

Heikal explained, “We wanted to take personal revenge for us and the homeland and restore the usurped Egyptian land by the Israeli enemy, so we were determined to participate in the front lines.”

Major General Syed Haykal says: “While preparing for the war, I was the commander of the Military Police Company, whose tasks were to secure roads for the military formations preparing to cross the canal, including what was intended for crossings by inflatable boats and others for amphibious vehicles, as well as establishing special lanes to cross floating bridges, as well as We were working on a system called an adjacent parameter that was lit at night, as each formation had a specific color that it would walk on at night, heading to the crossing areas.

He added: “The Israeli enemy was pushing elements of its affiliates wearing military police uniforms, so we were aware of that and we were changing the color of the military police insignia on a daily basis, in contrast to the red badges common to the military police forces. Indeed, many of the elements of the Israeli enemy were captured before the start of the battle.” “.

Heikal pointed out that: “The zero hour began at two oclock on the sixth of October, and I was tasked with opening corridors for the forces that crossed to the east of the canal by boats and amphibious vehicles. The way to make bridges

Major General “Heikal” proudly remembers the heroism of the martyr Major Muhammad Muhammad Zard, saying: “He was the commander of one of the companies in charge of crossing bridges, and when he saw elements of the enemy forces sitting in one of the trenches, he set off towards them pointing the barrel of a half-inch cannon, and jumped from the boat that was carrying him.” On the eastern mainland of the canal and faster by blocking the fire energy with his back, in order to protect the forces assigned to cross, to obtain martyrdom alone in defense of his colleagues and his homeland, and this officer was from one of the villages of Dakahlia Governorate.

Major General Syed Ali Heikal concluded his speech to “Masrawy”, saying: “The Egyptian army captured hundreds, and I was tasked with transporting prisoners by vehicles to the Third Field Army Command, but I refused to transport them by carriage and determined to transport them on foot among our brave soldiers so that they would see them in order to raise their morale and fight.” “.
