The US Federal Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of 6 people on charges of plotting to overthrow the Michigan state government and kidnap its governor, Gretchen Whitmer.
The attorney’s office for the western region of the state indicated that “the defendants may face life imprisonment.”
The FBI announced that “the operation will be announced at a press conference of law enforcement officials in Grand Rapids,” in the presence of Attorney General Dana Nessel and others.
The office stated, “According to a written statement from Special Agent Richard Trask, a group of individuals were discussing the overthrow of some government and law enforcement personnel in early 2020.”
The office added, “The plot included access to an armed group whose name was not mentioned in the affidavit.”
Trask said, “There is a possible reason to indict 6 men – Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Tai Garbin, Caleb Franks, Daniel Harris, and Brandon Caserta – of plotting to kidnap the governor, who is a democracy and critic of President Donald Trump.”
He added, “The group agreed to use the time until the final exercise of the operation in order to raise funds for the purchase of explosives and other supplies.”
