Dubai Electricity and Water Authority registered a new patent after researchers in its Research and Development Center developed an innovative system specialized in smart charging stations for electric vehicles, allowing all types of electric vehicles to be charged using a single cable and plug, whether vehicles that are charged by alternating current or direct current .

The new system contributes to making the design of charging stations as user-friendly as possible, as it simplifies the charging process and allows electric vehicle drivers to charge their cars very easily, without the need to bring appropriate charging cables to their vehicles. The charging station automatically adapts the cable and the charging process to the vehicle’s requirements, so that all electric vehicles are charged through one system. The Research and Development Center is currently working on building a prototype for further studies.

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, expressed his pride in this scientific achievement, which is added to the authority’s record of success and distinction. His Excellency Al Tayer said: “The authority is working to achieve the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, to accelerate the pace of transformation towards a green economy and make Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050. As a global leader in sustainable and innovative, the authority is keen to harness innovation and creativity to encourage and stimulate the use of sustainable transportation means and increase the number of electric and hybrid government vehicles, thus contributing to reducing carbon emissions in the road transport sector, which is the second highest sector in greenhouse gas emissions in the Emirate. Dubai.

He added, “The patent that the authority registered today provides an easy, innovative and friendly experience for the consumer and the environment, in addition to strengthening the authority’s position as one of the leading service institutions in the world. This patent is the second that the center has registered since it was inaugurated by His Highness in March of the year. Ongoing, 4 more patents are being registered. ”

On his part, Dr. Saif Saeed Al Muhairi, Vice President – Research and Development at the authority, said: “The Research and Development Center adopts an approach based on improving the services provided by the authority to its customers by developing the latest technologies and sustainable energy and water solutions and conducting applied research to ensure the continuity of the authority’s leadership globally. From our keenness to enrich the local and global scientific community, we are keen to develop talents and provide an interactive and positive environment that helps researchers to innovate and create, and to provide more scientific publications and innovations.

Dr. Edion Rodriguez – Senior Researcher at the Authority’s Research and Development Center said: “The idea of a universal electric vehicle charger emerged in a research project on electric vehicle charging stations that focus on facilitating the user experience. The project aimed to find innovative solutions to the challenges that users face during the charging process. Traditional service stations with standard and fast indirect services. ”

Hamad Muhammad Al-Bashar, a researcher in the field of smart network integration at the center, explains the advantages offered by the comprehensive automatic charging system, and says: “To charge electric vehicles, subscribers to the” Green Charger “service had to pass a special card issued by the authority and then connect the cable to the charger and then to the vehicle to start Shipping However, the new system includes an optical identification system, a camera, a microprocessor unit, and an artificial intelligence program that can recognize the vehicle plate number and determine the type of plug appropriate for the vehicle through the stored database and give the order to the system to activate the required charging system.

This entire process is done without any external interference, and during a very easy process, as all the customer has to do is pull the cable and connect it to the vehicle.
“Our research focused on integrating all charging methods into a single charging system, creating a single cable and plug compatible with all different charging standards. In addition, the process was fully automated,” said Dr. Indica Muruaga – Senior Researcher at the R&D Center.

It is noteworthy that the Research and Development Center has more than 65 scientific publications so far in the field of clean energy. The studies and research of the center focus on four main areas: electricity production from solar energy, smart grid integration, energy and water efficiency.

The authority provides more than 270 “green charger” stations for charging electric cars in various locations in the emirate of Dubai. Non-commercial electric vehicle owners registered in the “Green Charger” service can charge their cars for free until December 31, 2021, and that is exclusively at public charging stations. Belonging to the authority and not in the home charging stations. As for owners of commercial vehicles belonging to governmental and semi-governmental institutions, companies, and agencies, the freight fee is 29 fils per kilowatt hour.
