The body of Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona was transferred Thursday (November 26, 2020) to Casa Rosada, the headquarters of the Argentine Federal Government, as large numbers of citizens lined up to bid farewell to the late star.
According to TYC and ESPN, Maradonas body arrived at Casa Rosada around 5 am local time (8:00 GMT) after holding a special night ceremony in the presence of his family and friends.
Some citizens managed to attend between six in the morning and four in the afternoon. But most of them arrived at Plaza de Mayo, in front of the Casa Rosada hours earlier, where they chanted loudly in tribute to the Argentine legend, who died Wednesday at the age of 60.
About 30 minutes before the doors were opened again, a large crowd gathered, amid tight security measures. Limited problems were reported in the Plaza de Mayo as police tried to calm the crowd. Small groups of 20 people were allowed to enter the government headquarters to see the farewell, and some threw bouquets of flowers, T-shirts and some small gifts on Maradonas coffin.
According to press reports, Maradona suffered a heart attack on Wednesday without being successful in his rescue attempts. Maradonas lawyer, Matthias Morla, said on his Twitter account on Thursday that he would request an investigation into the death of the Argentine star, stressing that medical care was at Maradonas home, but there were many delays in providing it, including the ambulance, after it was called up.
“It is incomprehensible that my friend did not receive the attention of health workers for 12 hours, and the arrival of the ambulance took more than 30 minutes,” Morla wrote. He added, “This fact cannot be condoned and I will request an investigation, as Diego used to tell me: You are a soldier, behaved without mercy.”
He continued: “To describe Diego in these moments of hidden grief, I would say that he was a good son, the best player in history, and an honest person.” Maradona, who captained Argentina to the 1986 World Cup, underwent surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage earlier this month. Maradona is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time.
