On Tuesday, the US Army Chiefs of Staff issued a statement affirming their recognition of the legitimacy of the elections won by President-elect Joe Biden, and condemning the violent incidents committed by President Donald Trump’s supporters at the headquarters of Congress.
In their statement, the leaders said, “The American people have trusted their armed forces to protect it and the constitution for nearly 250 years, and as we have done throughout history, the US Army will remain obedient to the legal orders of our civilian leadership, support civilian authorities in protecting lives, property, and public safety under the law, and will remain committed. Fully protect the US Constitution and defend it against all enemies abroad and at home ».
They added that “the riots in Washington DC on January 6 were a direct assault on the US Congress, the Capitol building, and the constitutional process,” naming the two policemen who lost their lives during these events.
And the US Army Chief of Staff added: “We have witnessed illegal acts inside the Congress building, and freedom of expression and assembly does not give anyone the right to resort to violence, insubordination and conspiracy.”
They emphasized that “on January 20, according to the constitution, and with confirmation by Congress, the courts and the states, President-elect Joe Biden will be inaugurated and our commander in chief will be No. 46.”
