The Court of Cassation decided to accept the appeal of a defendant in the case known in the media with the assassination of Counselor Hisham Barakat, the former Attorney General, and canceled his 10-year prison sentence.

The Court of Cassation had previously ruled against other defendants in the case known in the media as “the assassination of the former Public Prosecutor Hisham Barakat” by upholding the death sentence against 9 defendants, replacing the death penalty for life against 6 defendants, and other sentences ranging from aggravation from 3 to 15 years.

Counselor Hisham Barakat, the former Public Prosecutor, was martyred after a bombing that targeted his convoy in Heliopolis, in June 2015.
