The return of the Egyptian director Khaled Youssef to his country sparked a political controversy


The announcement of Khaled Youssef’s return to Egypt during the coming period sparked a state of controversy, which was revealed by the journalist Amr Adib through his program “The Story”.

Adeeb pointed out that Youssef’s departure was for political reasons, stressing that Egypt is on the cusp of an openness in the political climate, to include the opposition not involved in violence, as he put it, and that the Egyptian director was one of the most prominent men of the June 30, 2013 revolution, as he described it.


Khaled Youssef’s absence in February 2019 coincided with the leakage of video clips – attributed to him – that he collected with two young actors in disgraceful situations, and the two actresses later accused him in the prosecution’s investigations – and according to the investigations – that he had filmed them with the intention of extortion.

On the other hand, Khaled Youssef confirmed at the time that the videos attributed to him were published after announcing the rejection of the constitutional amendments aimed at extending President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s rule until 2030, and before he was transferred to the prosecution office for investigation, Youssef left Egypt heading to Paris, accompanied by his wife and children.

In July 2019, a decision was issued to release the two representatives, after they were charged with incitement to immorality and immorality.

Return provokes the opposition

The announcement of Khaled Youssef’s return did not find the expected welcome. Tweeters attacked the journalist Amr Adib after welcoming the return of the Egyptian director, stressing that the dispute was political, in addition to Youssef’s involvement in moral issues, and that the opening of the political field must include real opponents.

Terms of return

According to Egyptian websites, the decision to allow Khaled Youssef to return to Egypt came after negotiations with the authorities not to prosecute him or arrest him by the Egyptian security services, especially since no judicial rulings were issued against him, and he enjoys all his rights as a citizen in movement and travel.

While Khaled pledged to them – according to the same sources – in return, not to participate in any political activity, but rather to focus on his work in cinema only, provided that he would return to his hometown in the Qalyubia governorate to spend time with his family, before returning to Cairo to practice his duties.
