The match between Cote d’Ivoire and its guest Ethiopia, which was held on Tuesday, for the sixth round of the qualifiers for the African Nations Cup finals, witnessed a strange incident.
In the 82nd minute, when the result indicated Côte d’Ivoire’s advancement 3-1, the arena referee who administered the match, Charles Burleigh Polo, fell unconscious due to stress, and the medical staff intervened and transferred him to a hospital outside the stadium.
The surprise is that the fourth referee is from Cote d’Ivoire, and the regulations do not allow him to continue the match in place of the injured referee, which put officials of the Confederation of African Football, “enough”, in an embarrassing position.
The match was suspended for a long time before the match coordinator decided to end the confrontation.
“CAF” announced later, that Ethiopia qualified with Cote d’Ivoire for the 11th group, after Madagascar and Niger drew 0-0.
Côte d’Ivoire topped the Group 11 ranking with 13 points, 4 points behind Ethiopia, which ranked second, while Madagascar ranked third with 8 points, and Niger placed at the top of the group’s ranking with 4 points.
