American Nature: A drug for leprosy that may help combat the Corona virus

A new study published in the journal “Nature” revealed that one of the leprosy drugs showed promising results against the Corona virus in laboratory experiments on hamsters, as it prevented the ability of the coronavirus to enter cells and multiply in them, according to the website medicalnewstodayThe drug has also shown promising results against Coronavirus Others such as: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)MERS) In laboratory experiments.

The new study, conducted by researchers at the Sanford Burnham Prebis Institute in California, and the University of Hong Kong, said that the leprosy drug Clofazimine showed anti-viral properties against corona, as it limits the severe inflammatory response that usually occurs with corona.

And researchers are still racing to determine which drugs may be useful in fighting the Corona virus epidemic, as one team last year identified 21 drugs that already exist as promising to treat Corona symptoms, and among these drugs is the leprosy drug, which has proven effective against both the Corona virus and East Syndrome Middle respiratory in laboratory experiments.

“I hope that we will test the leprosy drug in the second phase of clinical trials as soon as possible for people who have tested positive for corona but have not been admitted to hospital,” said study co-author Dr. Sumit Chanda.

“The animals that received the drug experienced less lung damage and less viral load, especially when receiving the drug before infection,” said study co-author Dr. Ren Sun, from the University of Hong Kong.

“Besides inhibiting the virus, there are indications that the drug is also regulating the host’s response to the virus, providing better control of infection and inflammation,” Sun added.
