According to the official FIFA website, it has been decided that the draw ceremony will take place on April 21 at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, at 11:00 Cairo time.
In its statement, FIFA indicated that the countdown to the Olympic Games “Tokyo 2020” has begun again, after it was postponed to take place in 2021 due to the spread of the new Corona virus (Covid-19).
FIFA said that in less than a month, 16 male and 12 female teams will know the identity of their competitors in the football competition in the upcoming Olympic Games.
FIFA confirmed that the draw ceremony will be broadcast on the International Federation channel on YouTube.
According to a FIFA statement, the Japan men’s team will be ranked first in the A1 position in terms of the draw and the match schedule.
Egypt has qualified among 14 teams for the upcoming Olympic Games, while two places remain for North American “CONCACAF” teams, as the qualifying tournament will be held from 18-30 March.
FIFA published the rules of the lottery and determining the classification, as the 16 teams will be divided into 4 pots, each pot consisting of 4 teams, based on a classification that will be determined based on previous participations.
The ranking is based on the total points obtained in the last five Olympic matches in the football competition (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 for a loss). Thus the ranking used is based on the points obtained in the Olympic Games 2016, 2012, 2008, 2004 and 2000.
FIFA also decided to award 5 additional points to each team that won the continental competition in which it qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
FIFA stressed that there will not be more than one team from one continent in the same group.
