On Wednesday, the US Senate approved the appointment of Rachel Levin, President Joe Biden’s candidate for Assistant Secretary of Health, the first declared transgender to confirm her appointment.
The House approved Levin’s appointment by 52 to 48, despite strong Republican opposition.
As the United States continues its efforts to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic that has killed more than 545,000 Americans, Levin has reached this position after leading efforts to combat the Corona virus in Pennsylvania. Levine has also worked as a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Pennsylvania State University.
During her appointment confirmation hearing, Republican Senator Rand Paul asked her about her stance on transsexual surgeries.
