A security source said that Qassem Muhammad al-Zubaidi (35 years) killed the victim, Mahyoub Shamsan Al-Zaghouri (80 years), the muezzin of the Rahman Mosque in the Al-Darba neighborhood, stabbed him with a “janbiya” (a kind of dagger), and then smashed his head with a stone after the dawn prayer today, Tuesday.
The source said that the perpetrator barricaded himself in his house when trying to arrest him and spread a cleaver in the face of the police who shot him in the foot and managed to arrest him.
A video clip circulating at the moment of the arrest of the perpetrator showed him shouting “Oh God, oh God, the jinn killed us,” claiming that he is haunted.
Eyewitnesses from the neighborhood’s residents told Al-Jazeera Mubasher that the killer had a window facing the mosque, and that the crime occurred because the killer was disturbed by the call to prayer, confirming that the perpetrator threatened the victim and assaulted him more than once.
An investigation is still underway to determine the circumstances of the accident.
