Portugal came from a goal behind to beat Luxembourg (3-1) in the match that brought them together today, Tuesday, in the third round of European qualifiers for the World Cup finals “Qatar 2022”.
Gerson Rodriguez stunned the visitors with a goal in the 30th minute, and Portuguese striker Diogo Jota responded with the equalizer in the last minute of the first half.
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo came in the 51st minute and put his country ahead by scoring his second goal with a shot from inside the penalty area.
Substitute Joao Palinia concluded the Portuguese hat-trick in the 80th minute of the match.
Portugal raised their score after this victory to 7 points, to top the list of Group A, surpassing by goal difference Serbia, who in turn beat their Azerbaijani host with two goals to one.
Meanwhile, Luxembourg remained in third place with 4 points, followed by Azerbaijan and Ireland, in fourth and fifth places, respectively, without points, and each of the three teams played two games.
Qatar plays in this group, but its participation is limited only to preparing for the World Cup, which will play its matches at home in the winter of 2022.
