Chinese technology giant Tencent said its PUBG Mobile mobile action game has exceeded one billion accumulated downloads outside of China, making it one of the most successful games worldwide, according to Reuters.
And PUBG Mobile, the mobile version of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, in which a group of players fight each other until one fighter survives, has been very popular since the launch of the so-called battle royale game three years ago.
The latest download numbers will put it behind only Subway Surfers from Kiloo Games and Candy Crush Saga from King Digital Entertainment, both of which are unofficial titles that are relatively easy to play and appeal to a wide audience, according to data analytics company Sensor Tower.
“The PUBG Mobile investigation of 1 billion downloads shows that the base games, in this case the AAA Battle Royale title based on the IP address of the PC of the same name, can achieve the same range in the mobile space,” said Daniel Ahmed, analyst at Niko Partners .
And Tencent owns another battle royale title in China called Peacekeeper Elite, the world’s largest video game company by revenue.
The announcement came as Tencent reported that its revenue from online games rose 29% in the fourth quarter, driven by an increase in users’ payments for video games in China and international markets.
She said her two great games, Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile, continued to lead in China and internationally, respectively, in the same quarter.
Tencent said it aims to make half of its revenue from games from abroad.
