The number of foreign correspondents in China is declining due to restrictions on the press there

John Sudworth, the BBC’s Beijing correspondent, moved to Taiwan after coming under pressure and threats from the Chinese authorities.

Sudworth left China with his family and has won awards for his coverage of the Chinese authorities’ treatment of the Muslim Uighur minority in Xinjiang.

The BBC said it was proud of the journalistic work it did, and that it would remain its correspondent in China.

Sudworth, who settled in China nine years ago, said he left for Taiwan after his stay became so difficult.
