Dr. Cynthia Sassen, a famous American nutritionist, revealed why bananas should be part of the daily diet.
The expert indicates that a medium-sized banana contains 422 milligrams of potassium, which equates to 12% of the body’s daily need. Bananas are also an important source of dietary fiber, which is essential for the normal functioning of the digestive system. Bananas also contain 20% of the body’s daily need for vitamin C and vitamin B6. All these and other elements positively affect the general health of the body.
The expert notes that it was found from the results of a scientific study published in the journal PLoS ONE in which fourteen cyclists participated, half of whom drank a cup of carbohydrates drink, and the other half ate half a banana every 15 minutes during a three-hour bike race. After the race was over, doctors analyzed blood samples from all participants, and found that the effect of bananas is not different from the effect of carbohydrate drinks.
“But the benefits of bananas are more, because they contain many more nutrients than are found in carbohydrate drinks that athletes drink,” says Sass. “In addition, bananas contain a mixture of natural sugars and antioxidants.”
She adds: Bananas are a good source of resistant starch, which suppresses appetite and helps lose excess weight. It also helps speed up the metabolism process and “triggers the fat burning process in the liver.” A medium-sized completely unripe banana contains 12.5 grams, while a ripe banana contains only about five grams.
And the expert Sass points out that bananas reduce the level of blood pressure, and this means that the body will not need to make a great effort to pump blood around the body. And she added, a diet that contains potassium-rich foodstuffs reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke by 21%. “The more potassium you consume, the more sodium you will get out of the body, because potassium acts as a natural diuretic,” she says.
In addition, bananas contain beneficial bacteria, including probiotics, which improve digestion. There is also prebiotic, which is a very important probiotic food for gut health. Prebiotics are found in raisins, asparagus, onions, and garlic.
The expert points out that thanks to the potassium present in bananas, the digestive process improves, it prevents bloating and constipation, the acidity of the stomach decreases, and it helps to get rid of heartburn and even stomach ulcers.
