The “storytel” audiobook platform has published episodes entitled “The Elephant”, which are realistic experiences of young men and women from different Arab countries with mental illnesses.

Throughout 25 episodes, storytel worked to narrow the gap between psychologists and those in need of psychological counseling, by cooperating with a team of doctors and psychotherapists to read and discuss the stories presented, to produce each story the specialist responded to as an audio episode and make it available on the application.

The project is supported and financed by a “D-Gil” grant from the CFI Operator, from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development. It is presented by the platform while keeping the identity of its owners anonymous.

The name “elephant” comes from the Western term “the elephant in the room,” referring to a dominant problem that occupies so much of our lives that we nevertheless ignore. The elephant in this room is our mental health.

“Taking care of mental health is not a luxury” is the slogan of the project. Bulimia, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, kleptomania, postpartum depression, claustrophobia, and other disorders are dealt with in “elephant” episodes with their causes and symptoms mentioned. Psychologists ’reflections on the various mental disorders in the episodes of” The Elephant “represent a step to raising awareness and removing the stigma associated with talking about it openly.

The stories are read by professional readers, carefully chosen to convey each story with realistic performance and sincere feelings, under the guidance of the production team and the audio director of the project, who worked together to create the experience of a “virtual session”, between the patient and the psychiatrist, who despite their remoteness, meet in This experience is for real change.

Storytel released the first six episodes of the project for free on its YouTube channel as well as on all podcast platforms, such as Apple Podcast and Google Podcast, and presents the rest of the season on the Storytel app available on iOS and Android devices.

In contrast to the episodes, the company started the hashtag “Tell_ about the elephant in your room” through its official pages on social media, in order to encourage everyone to take a step forward and contribute to changing society’s view of mental health.

Storytel is one of the world’s largest audio and e-book streaming companies, providing unlimited listening and reading to more than 500,000 titles on a global scale.
