After several months of controversy, an official at the European Medicines Regulatory Agency confirmed a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and the blood clots observed after it was taken.
Sky News Arabia quoted Marco Cavalieri, the official in charge of vaccination strategy at the Medicines Agency, as saying to the Italian newspaper “El Massaggero”: “We can now say that, it is clear that there is a link with the vaccine. But we do not know yet what causes this reaction.”
He added, “In short, in the next few hours we will say there is a connection, but we still have to understand how that happens.”
On Saturday, the British Medicines Agency announced that 7 people who received the AstraZeneca vaccine have died from blood clots, out of a total of 30 cases recorded so far.
As of March 24, the agency had received reports of 22 cases of cerebral venous thrombosis and eight other cases of thrombosis associated with low platelet count out of a total of 18.1 million doses administered.
AFP quoted agency director John Ryan as saying, “Our in-depth examination of these reports continues.”
In France, the Medicines Safety Agency announced that it had detected two new deaths due to blood clots in two people who received the AstraZeneca vaccine.
A report by the agency indicated that, during the period between 19 and 25 March, it detected 3 cases of blood clots after vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine, which resulted in two deaths.
Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign in France, 12 cases of blood clots have been reported, resulting in 4 deaths.
It is noteworthy that a number of countries, most of which are members of the European Union, have suspended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine due to reports of blood clots in people who received the vaccine.
