North Macedonia won a resounding surprise, on Wednesday, by beating its German national team 2-1, in the third round of European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
North Macedonia advanced in the 45th minute, with the goal of carrying the signature of veteran, Goran Pandev, before Ilkay Gundogan equalized the score for Germany from a penalty kick, in the 63rd minute.
The German national team then took control of the match, and its striker Timo Werner had a real chance to score the “Manschaft” goal, in the 79th minute, when he received a ball on a golden plate inside the penalty area, to find himself face to face with the goalkeeper, but he replaced the ball. In the net, he shot in the air so the ball strangely passed in front of the goal and went off the field.
North Macedonia punished its German team, for wasting this opportunity, by scoring the second goal and winning, in the 85th minute, through Elif Elmas.
With this loss, Germany fell to third place in Group X by stopping at 6 points, to lead North Macedonia towards second place on goal difference, while Armenia is the only one in the group, with 9 points.
