Sheikh Zayed Book Award: Why did the German philosopher Jurgen Habermas decline to accept the Cultural Personality of the Year award?

The prominent German philosopher and sociologist, Jurgen Habermas, has apologized for accepting the Sheikh Zayed Book Prize, which is worth nearly a quarter of a million euros (272,000 dollars) and is offered by the United Arab Emirates.

The official website of the award announced that Habermas was awarded the title “Cultural Personality of the Year 2021, in recognition of a long career spanning more than half a century.”

Habermas (91 years) is considered one of the most prominent living German philosophers since the second half of the twentieth century. He is known for his association with the theoretical legacy of what is known as the Frankfurt School and its critical thinking in social theory. And he has a special theory known as the communicative action theory.

His books in the fields of philosophy and social theory numbered more than fifty, and he was described by the Stanford Philosophical Encyclopedia as one of the most influential philosophers in the world. He has translated many of his books and theoretical contributions into Arabic.
