While some countries reduce working hours to increase creativity and thus increase their production, other countries are still seeking to increase working hours.. In this context, American scientists are seeking to develop a portable device that can pass electric current through the skin of the neck to the vagus nerve to stimulate brain activity and reduce Fatigue in a person who was unable to fall asleep during long periods to enhance his ability to work and reduce the error rate.

And, as published by the “Communications Biology” magazine, which is specialized in scientific news, a team of researchers at the US Air Force Research Laboratory, headed by Lindsey McIntyre, developed a preliminary study to test the possibility of using a market device that enables its users to stay awake for several days without resorting to caffeine and stimulants. It relieves the effects of stress caused by lack of sleep by using an electrical current through the skin that stimulates the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve transmits signals between the brain, the digestive system, and many major organs of the body, which determine a person’s mood and ability to produce and work. Scientists recently found that stimulating the vagus nerve improves memory and learning ability.

As reported by the journal Communications Biology, US Air Force Research Laboratory researchers relied on 40 US Air Force volunteers, who had not slept for 34 hours, and the researchers determined about nine times, separated by regular intervals, their ability to remain alert while performing multiple tasks at the same time. Twelve hours after the start of the tests, one group of volunteers was allowed to use the electrical stimulus, while the rest used a placebo stimulus.

According to the preliminary study, the researchers concluded that members of the group that used electrical stimulus for the vagus nerve performed their tasks better, and confirmed that they felt less tired, compared to members of the group that used a placebo stimulus.

These effects peaked after 12 hours of using the electrical stimulator. Overall, the electrical stimulus kept sleep-deprived pilots awake for 19 hours.

According to the preliminary study, stimulating the vagus nerve with a portable device could be a simple and safe way to reduce the negative effects of poor sleep.

The researchers emphasized that the side effects of the electrical vagus nerve stimulator device are less than taking caffeine or drugs that are used for the same purpose, but the use of caffeine leads to a feeling of fatigue and fatigue and causes slowed reaction and poor attention, which is a serious problem that will cause disasters, especially in the ranks of the elderly. Those who work in professions that affect the lives of others, such as doctors, pilots, drivers, and others who work long hours on a daily and frequent basis, where any mistake they commit threatens the lives of many.

Caffeine or other chemical stimulants are used to combat sleep fatigue, but they are usually ineffective, but doctors recommend avoiding them.

Lack of sleep causes a number of health risks, such as heart disease and diabetes, but it increases feelings of stress and anger and reduces the ability to focus and produce.
