The Egyptian authorities are continuing their intensive investigations to unravel the mystery of the “Treasure Apartment of Zamalek” (in downtown Cairo), which the security services found by chance during the past few days.
The Egyptian Ministry of Justice has formed several committees from the ministries of tourism, antiquities, finance and culture to examine and inventory large quantities of archaeological artifacts, medals and historical decorations, some of which belong to the Alawite family, as well as gold and rare artifacts that were in the possession of an “important person,” according to what security sources said to Egyptian newspapers. yesterday.
According to what the security sources have reported to some local Egyptian media, these holdings covered the entire area of the apartment, to the extent that senior state officials described it as a “big issue.”
The Inspection Department decided to wax the apartment, appoint strict guards on it, and delegate several committees from the specialized authorities to inventory and examine the assets under the daily direct supervision of a number of execution judges, provided that a report is prepared on the conclusions of these committees.
Counselor Omar Marawan, the Egyptian Minister of Justice, described this case as “big” and “diverse.” He said, in televised statements to the “On My Responsibility” program, presented by the journalist Ahmed Moussa, on the “Echo of the Country” channel, yesterday evening, that “The details of this case will be announced as soon as the investigations are completed in the coming days,” noting that “Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi thanked during his meeting the day before yesterday with heads of bodies and judicial bodies, a number of judges and employees of the South Cairo Court for what they did in The big issue,” referring to “the treasure of Zamalek’s apartment.”
Egyptian media and observers described the apartment in which this precious treasure was found in the “Ali Baba” cave, while security sources for Egyptian newspapers estimated the size of these seizures at more than one billion Egyptian pounds (one US dollar is equivalent to 15.7 Egyptian pounds).
A source in the Egyptian Interior said that “the police were implementing the law against one of the people against whom a court ruling was issued in the upscale neighborhood of Zamalek, and that the security services were forced to break the door of the apartment when they did not find anyone in it in order to implement the ruling, but the surprise was represented by the presence of many archaeological holdings, rare antiques and statues.” antique.”
This case brings to mind the case of smuggling antiquities known as “the case of smuggling major antiquities to Italy”, in February 2019, during which the criminal court convicted the artist and businessman Boutros Raouf Ghaly, brother of the former Minister of Finance, Youssef Boutros Ghali, He was imprisoned for 15 years and fined 5 million pounds, before the sentence was reduced to 7 years in the first case of “hiding antiquities inside his house.”
