In Euro 2016, the round of 16 witnessed only one fiery confrontation between Italy and Spain, and then the Azzurri passed to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory.

But Euro 2020 may witness confrontations between the giants in the round of 16.

Italy vs Holland

For that confrontation to occur, Italy must top its first group, which includes Turkey, Wales and Switzerland, and the Netherlands will be runners-up in Group C, which includes Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia.

Italy is a knot for the Netherlands, the Azzurri have won 11 times against the Netherlands, while the Netherlands have won only 3 times, and drawn 9 times.

Their most prominent encounter in the Euro, was in the 2000 semi-final in Amsterdam Arena. Then Gianluca Zambrotta was sent off in the first half, and the Dutch missed two penalties at home, before missing 3 penalty kicks against Francesco Toldo, and Italy qualified for the final.

Another confrontation brought them together in the first round of the group stage in 2008, when Al-Tawahin won 3-0.

England vs Germany

Is there anything better than that confrontation in the round of 16? If England tops its group that includes Croatia, Scotland and the Czech Republic, it will face the sixth group of death runners-up, which includes defending champions Portugal, runners-up France, Germany and Hungary.

Any giant trio qualified in Group F runners-up, with England, or even world runners-up Croatia, leading to Group D, will guarantee a fiery confrontation in the round of 16.

But the confrontation between Germany and England always has a special character. England won 13 times, while Germany won 15 times, and tied only 4 times.

The two main World War II sides met in the European Nations Cup twice, perhaps the most important of which was in the 1996 semi-finals at Wembley, and Mannschaft won 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The one who missed the England kick was its current coach, Gareth Southgate.

Belgium vs France

The fourth world against the World Cup champion, a confrontation that may occur in the round of 16 for Euro 2020.

That confrontation only requires Belgium to lead its second group, which includes Denmark, Finland and Russia, and France to qualify as third in Group F, with the third groups with the third group not qualifying and the fifth group not qualifying, or the third group not qualifying (unless he did not qualify with the owner of Group F).

The emotional confrontation of Thierry Henry, who will be on the Belgium bench as an assistant to Roberto Martinez, will be revenge for the Belgians who were eliminated by France from the last World Cup in the semi-finals.

The Euro Championships France and Belgium only met once, in 1984, when France won 5-0 on their way to their first title.

Croatia vs France

A repeat of the 2018 World Cup final is possible in the round of 16 of Euro 2020.

Croatia tops Group D, and France, runners-up to Group F, is possible, and then the World Cup final will be repeated in London.

Historically, Croatia has never defeated France in 8 matches, where they tied twice and France won 6 times, most importantly in the 2018 World Cup final and the 1998 World Cup semi-finals.

At Euro 2004, the two teams tied 2-2 in the first round.

England vs Spain

For that confrontation to occur, England must be runners-up to Group D, and Spain runners-up to Group E, which includes Sweden, Poland and Slovakia.

England beat Spain 14 times, lost 10 times, and tied 3 matches.

The only match against the two giants in the Euro was in the 1996 edition in England, when the Three Lions passed on penalties from the Matador obstacle in the quarter-finals.
