Ronaldo: Maintaining the Euro title is more important than records

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo is preparing to break the participation and registration numbers in the European Football Championship, but he did not show any concern about his personal fate.

“This is not what makes me more excited,” Ronaldo said in a press conference before facing Hungary tomorrow at the start of the team’s campaign in the tournament.

Ronaldo added: “The best number will be winning the tournament for the second time in a row,” referring to the achievement previously achieved by the Spanish national team in the 2008 and 2012 editions.

“The team is ready, what I really want is to start well. Winning the first match is crucial. Hungary is a good team with the fans at its side, but the most important thing is the presence of people on the field, we want to enjoy this tournament.”

Ronaldo, captain of the Portuguese national team, became the first player to participate in five European Nations Championships, after he appeared for the first time with the team in 2004 and also participated in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 editions.

If he participates in the three matches in the group stage, the other matches will be against Germany on June 19, and France on the 23rd of the same month. He will advance by one match over Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who participated in 58 matches in the continental event, including the qualifying matches.

And if he scores one goal in the tournament, he will become the best scorer in the history of the competition, as he is equal in the number of goals with French player Michel Platini, top scorer of the French national team, with nine goals each.

The Portuguese national team enters the 2020 edition and is the holder of the 2016 edition, after defeating France 1-0 in the final match.
