Team leaders boycott Brazilian president’s meeting

Controversy continues over the holding of the Copa America this year, after the leaders of the participating teams refused to attend the tournament’s meeting with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

The competition is scheduled to start next Friday (June 11) and will continue until July 10, 2021.

The tournament was planned to be held in Argentina and Colombia, but the latter requested to postpone the event due to the political crisis it is going through as a result of some internal protests, and with the poor health conditions in Argentina due to Corona, the organization was withdrawn from them, and the matter is assigned to Brazil.

And according to what the newspaper “Marca” reported today, Sunday, the leaders of the participating teams refused to attend the Brazilian president’s meeting, which increases speculation about a joint and coordinated boycott of the players.

The newspaper pointed out that Chile and Argentina refused to host the tournament because of the pandemic, and many feel that Brazil should have done the same in order to preserve the players.

The newspaper stressed that the boycott of the players will be historical and dramatic, as the leaders communicate among themselves in an attempt to reach a consensus against the establishment of the tournament.
