The Egyptian film “feathers” directed by Omar Al-Zuhairi has been selected for screening in the official competition of the Critics’ Week at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for July 6-17.

“Rishes” is the first feature film by its director, and it tells the story of a wife who lives with her husband and children an ordinary life, but she does not bear any responsibility. Another, the heroine finds herself responsible for all the crises, and she also has to get her husband back, and through the film’s journey, we learn about the details of this family’s life and how the wife goes through a harsh and difficult change in her life in order to turn into a different person.

7 films in the competition

The International Critics Week competition highlights the first and second films directed by filmmakers from around the world, as 7 feature films and 6 films in special screenings compete in the competition, and among the works is the French film “Ryanafuter” by Julie Lacoste and Emmanuel Mar, in addition to the film “Amparo” from Colombia by Simon Mesa Soto, who tells about a woman in the midst of a civil war, as well as “Olga” from Switzerland and Ukraine by Elie Grabbi, and opens the week with an out-of-competition film “Robost” by director Constance Meyer, with star Gerard Depardieu.

The Film Selection Committee was keen on equalizing women and men directors, so the list includes films equally between them. It is headed by Romanian director Christian Mungiu, who received the Palme d’Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

Al-Zuhairi’s beginning is promising. In addition to his studies at the Film Institute in Cairo, it gave him the opportunity to work as an assistant with great directors, including Youssef Chahine and Yousry Nasrallah, and he learned a lot from them. In 2014, he presented his second work, “After Laying the Foundation Stone for the 375-kilometre Bathroom Project”, the first Egyptian film to be selected by the Cine Fondation at the Cannes Film Festival.

And the last session, which was held for only 3 days due to the crisis global situation as a result of the spread of the Corona virus, during which the Egyptian director Sameh Alaa won the best short film through “Stacher”, and it is the first Egyptian film to win this important award.
