Less than two weeks away from the first anniversary For the tragedy of BeirutSome deputies lost their conscience. In the past few days, a list of parliamentarians who signed a petition refusing to prosecute politicians in the Beirut Port explosion case was leaked before the judicial judiciary, and instead demands that they be referred to the Supreme Council to try ministers and presidents.

This petition was signed by deputies from the Amal Movement, Hezbollah, the Future, the Independent Center (that is, the bloc of former Prime Minister Najib Mikati), the National Bloc and a representative of the Association of Projects, including Bahia Hariri, Ibrahim al-Moussawi, Qassem Hashem, Ali Bazzi and others. And it caused the ignition of social media, as activists launched a campaign demanding that they withdraw their signatures and accusing them of disrupting the course of justice and the investigations by exploding. They launched the hashtags #Nawab_Nitrate and #Nawab_Shame.

This comes at a time when “The Legal Agenda, a non-profit research organization, considered the representatives request as a fraudulent maneuver to smuggle the accused out of the grip of the judicial investigator, Tariq Bitar, pointing out that there is several evidence of the fraudulent nature of this maneuver, the most important of which is that the Supreme Council for the Trial of Presidents and Ministers was established in 1990 has never been held and it is impossible to provide the majority required for its convening today (it requires the approval of two-thirds of the deputies), and therefore the request aims to open a parallel investigation to the investigation of Judge Tariq Bitar (the judicial investigator in the port explosion case), which leads to disruption of his work and smuggling Suspects out of his grasp, in favor of a mock court.

More than 200 dead

It is noteworthy that the petition calls for the trial of resigned Prime Minister Hassan Diab, Minister Youssef Fenianos, MPs Nohad Al-Mashnouq, Ghazi Zuaiter and Ali Hassan Khalil before the Supreme Council for the Trial of Presidents and Ministers instead of the judicial judiciary.

It is noteworthy that the explosion of the port of Beirut, which some have compared to the Hiroshima bomb, which left more than 200 dead and more than 6,000 wounded in the toll, sparked outrage from the political class accused of negligence and being responsible for the destruction of the capital. According to the authorities, it was caused by a fire that broke out in a warehouse in warehouse No. 12 in Beirut Port, where about 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate have been stored for 6 years, “without any preventive measures.”
