Luis de la Fuente, coach of the Spanish Olympic team, which opens its matches in the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, said that his team’s goal is to win the gold medal, as happened in the 1992 Barcelona Games.
Spain will play in the Tokyo Olympics in Group C, which includes Egypt, Argentina and Australia.
De la Fuente said in a press conference on the eve of facing Egypt on Thursday in the first round: “We have the same feeling as the Spanish team (the gold medal winner in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992). We will try to give everything we have and certainly we will live up to expectations.”
De la Fuente added that “the levels of the teams in Group C are very close, and every match will be very strong. We can’t wait to start the competition. We feel a great desire to show our level and the work we have done on the ground.”
On facing Egypt, the coach of the Spanish Olympic team said, “Egypt is a great team, the African champion, with great players and characterized by collective performance. We will face a high-level team, so we will need to exert all our energy to surpass it and all the competitors that follow it.”
On Tuesday, the coach of the Egyptian Olympic team, Shawky Gharib, stressed the strength of the Spanish team, which includes among its ranks many players who participated with “La Roja” in the European Nations Cup “Euro 2020”, and reached the semi-finals.
