Alaves players celebrate Victor LaGuardias goal against Atletico Madrid

After 7 rounds, the defending champion suffered the first loss of the season, and it was against Alaves, who won his first victory this season.

Alaves beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Mendesorroza stadium, in the seventh round of the Spanish League.

Victor LaGuardia scored the game’s only goal in the fourth minute of the match.

The win raised Alaves’ tally to three points in 19th and penultimate place, while Atletico Madrid’s balance froze at 14 points in second place.

Diego Simeone started with Antoine Griezmann alongside Luis Suarez in the attack of Atletico Madrid, and Mario Hermoso as a third defender alongside Felipe, and Stefan Savic.

Match Description

It only took 4 minutes for Alaves to take the first goal. A corner from Duarte, Victor LaGuardia rose to it and headed it into the goal.

Alaves almost scored the second in the 27th minute. A cross from Rodrigo de Paul, to LaGuardia, who almost shot, but Marcos Llorente intervened at the last minute.

Atletico Madrid took possession of the ball after that, but without any danger, so that the first half ended with the lead of the hosts.

Second half

Alaves started the second half strong as well. Miguel de la Fuente almost scored the second with a header in the 48th minute, had Hermoso not interfered in front of him.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid’s closest opportunity came in the 53rd minute. A fixed ball was executed by De Powell and passed everyone on its way to the goal, but the star of the match LaGuardi suddenly appeared and saved it from the goal line.

Enter Diego Simeone. Matthias Cunha, Renan Lodi and Angel Correa participated in the 59th minute instead of Geoffrey Kondogbia, Yannick Carrasco and Kieran Trippier.

Simeone was not satisfied with that, so he pushed Hector Herrera in the 61st minute instead of Mario Hermoso.

Alaves coach Abiardo Fernandez responded by entering Joselo, and Facundo Pellistri in the 61st minute as well, instead of Mamadou Sela and Miguel de Lafuente.

Atletico Madrid was close to equalizing again in the 69th minute by not dribbling a wonderful shot from De Powell, but Fernando Pacheco shined and saved it.

Alaves included Thomas Pena and Tachi in the 79th minute, replacing Antonio Moya and Ruben Duarte.

Alaves almost added the second in the 81st minute. Luis Rioja broke through from the left flank, then sent a cross to the substitute, unmarked Thomas Pena, but he shot over the goal.

Saul Garcia replaced Luis Roja in the 87th minute to waste time.

Mathieu Lahoz counted 4 minutes of lost time, and Jan Oblak took the lead in the 94th minute with the last set-piece. The ball was executed inside the penalty area, and Luis Suarez demanded a penalty kick, but the referee did not award anything, so the match ended with Alaves winning with a goal.

The win raised Alaves’ tally to three points in 19th and penultimate place, while Atletico Madrid’s balance froze at 14 points in second place.
