The White House expressed its regret at France’s decision to recall its ambassador to Washington, in protest of the defense deal the United States made with Australia at the expense of Paris.

“The White House regrets France’s decision to recall its ambassador to Washington,” a White House official told Reuters.

“The United States is committed to resolving differences with France in the coming days, and we are in contact with our French partners regarding the decision to recall the ambassador,” he added.

France recalled its ambassadors in the United States and Australia for consultations over the dispute that erupted over the submarine deal that it was to export to Australia, but it failed.

Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced this Friday evening in Paris that this exceptional step is being carried out at the request of President Emmanuel Macron.
