UAEU completes laboratories to develop a mental health monitoring system for senior citizens

The United Arab Emirates University has completed the programs of artificial intelligence laboratories by working on developing a mental health monitoring system for senior citizens and contributing to the early diagnosis of incurable brain diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

The artificial intelligence and robotics laboratory is also working at the university, which is part of the fourth industrial revolution system, which the UAE University is adopting by establishing 5 core laboratories to support the march of the fourth industrial revolution in the country.

Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory, Dr. Fadi Al-Najjar, stressed that the UAE University is keen to keep pace with the development of educational technologies and enhance the role of artificial intelligence in modern academic studies and programs, through which it seeks to improve the system of program outputs and academic curricula that meet the requirements of The country’s strategic plans and programs in preparation for the next fifty years, and the celebration of the country’s golden jubilee.

He added: “The programs of the artificial intelligence laboratories at the university that have been completed, consist in developing the mental health monitoring system for senior citizens and predicting the future development of their cases, relying on the robot (Abu Safe), which was designed and developed in the laboratory and with technical support from Microsoft in the Middle East and Africa. . So that the robot talks with potential patients and notices the changes in their facial expressions, the smoothness of their speech and the speed of their response to various stimuli, and giving clinical reports of the extent of the risk of cognitive impairment for them.” The robot uses artificial intelligence algorithms powered by Azure Cognitive Services, which is expected to have a promising future in the early diagnosis of incurable brain diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

The researchers expect that artificial intelligence and deep learning will have the greatest role in diagnosing diseases with greater speed and accuracy, which may exceed human capabilities. Smart home robots will have a role in monitoring and assisting the elderly and people with special needs in daily life activities, such as making sure they take medicine, helping them prepare their food, helping them exercise and movement, following up on their daily activities and creating daily reports of their cases to expedite medical intervention when needed.

He pointed out that, in line with the principle of coexistence of the scientific sector post-Covid-19, the laboratory is developing mechanisms based on artificial intelligence and deep learning that can be used in classrooms, whether physical or virtual, to monitor the degree of students’ attention or busyness during the semester and highlight their interests. Personal and mental abilities, and create detailed reports for the class teacher.

He said: “These mechanisms contribute to personalizing scientific curricula and enhancing and raising the efficiency of teachers with less effort, in addition to increasing students achievement and helping them learn more effectively. He believes that the integration of artificial intelligence into education will be the main driver of a wave of innovative and effective educational challenges that serve both teachers and students, and contribute to shaping the modern foundations of teaching and learning and improving educational practices and their outcomes. Through artificial intelligence, the educational curricula will be more dynamic and adaptive to meet the individual educational needs of each student and its centrality to suit the needs of society, and this is what the UAE University aims to achieve.”
