Barcelona announced the agreement to extend the contract of its young player Pedro Gonzalez Lopez, known as Pedri, so that the new contract includes a penalty clause of one billion euros if it is terminated.
Thus, the 18-year-old’s contract will be valid with Barcelona until mid-2026, to be signed by both sides, on Friday.
The Spanish player joined Barcelona in 2020, from Las Palmas, and played 53 games, in less than a season, which is the largest participation rate among the players of the ancient club.
The player also participated with the Spain national team, in the Euro 2020 competitions, and reached the semi-finals.
Pedri was instrumental in all the matches of the Spanish national team led by coach, Luis Enrique, and Pedri is considered a rising talent with Barcelona and Spain.
The player also contributed with his country’s Olympic team, to winning the silver medal in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, after losing to the Brazilian team, in the final match.
Pedri has participated in 4 matches so far in the new season of the (La Liga) with Barcelona, which suffers from a decline in level, as it occupies seventh place, in the standings of the championship table, while it is fourth in its group in the Champions League.
Spanish football expert Guillem Ballag analysis
What a great way to advertise, putting a penalty clause of this magnitude in the contract of the rookie player, which, on the occasion of talking about, is the same as the penalty clause in Karim Benzemas contract, with Real Madrid.
Of course, publicity is one of the most important reasons for this penalty clause, in addition to that it also shows the amount of trust that both parties attach to the other, as the player demonstrates in practice his desire to continue with Barcelona until the end of the contract, as well as the club.
Some other clubs had shown their desire to sign Pedri, and although he is not the highest paid player, the new contract will raise his salary, of course. Barcelona is the favorite club of Pedri, the old fan, who dreamed of joining the club, although he could have joined Real Madrid.
The player had previously gone to Real Madrid’s tests, but unfortunately failed, and the club considered him too short, and ended up in Las Palmas.
Pedri is currently considered one of the expected icons in the new Barcelona team, and the team aspires to extend the contract of its other young player, Enzo Fati, although the player’s agent makes it difficult for the player.
