Best Supplements for Brain Health and Working Memory Improvement!

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Since weight can be difficult to change, is there another way to reduce this risk?

Previous research indicated that taking ketone supplements benefited older adults diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, which benefited from research conducted at the University of British Columbias Okanagan campus.

A trial has shown that ketogenic supplementation may be a new treatment strategy to protect and improve brain health, particularly in those classified as obese. “Once validated with a larger group of people, we anticipate that these supplements can be used to protect and improve brain health in people with obesity,” said Dr. Jeremy Walsh.

In his investigation, obese volunteers took a ketone supplement three times a day, 15 minutes before each meal.

Obese volunteers took a taste-matched placebo instead – but not every participant was aware of whether or not they were taking a placebo.

This was continued for two weeks before the group exchanged the placebo and the ketone supplement.

To illustrate, participants who took ketogenic supplements for the first two weeks then took a placebo for the next two weeks.

The trial was designed in this way so that researchers could compare responses to the supplement versus a placebo in the same participants.

Cognitive function was validated via an iPad app with cerebral blood flow documented on a duplex ultrasound of the neck arteries.

Blood samples were also taken to measure the hormone known to improve cognitive function.

The results revealed that ketone supplementation boosted blood flow to the brain and improved aspects of cognitive function, such as processing speed.

Experts at Harvard Health recommend eating a Mediterranean diet, which focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds.

Moreover, it contains olive oil and moderate amounts of fish, poultry and dairy products.

“This eating pattern has long been recognized as promoting cardiovascular health,” the experts said.

As all health experts know, there is a strong link between heart and brain health.

It is also beneficial to get a consistent, renewed sleep, between seven to eight hours a day.
