Professor Detlev Dietrich said that psychological problems have increased during the Corona pandemic, especially fear, anxiety and depression.
The member of the European Depression Society explained that the psychological symptoms characteristic of depression are mood disorder, sadness, depression, loss of interest in hobbies, social isolation, loss of motivation, negative outlook on life and the future, low self-esteem, guilt, defeatism and despair.
There are also physical symptoms accompanying these psychological symptoms, namely: constant fatigue, lethargy, poor concentration, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and feeling pain for no apparent reasons.
Dietrich stressed the need to consult a doctor in the event of suffering under the weight of these symptoms daily for a period of more than two weeks, in order to exclude any organic cause, for example, the functional insufficiency of the thyroid gland, which leads to mood disorders and depression.
The earlier depression is diagnosed, the better the chances of treatment, and the severe consequences that may occur due to the exacerbation of the condition, such as self-harm and suicide, can be avoided.
Dietrich indicated that depression is treated with medications and psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy, which aims to create motivation, raise the level of self-esteem and self-confidence, and adopt a positive outlook on life and the future.
