Courtois said on Sky Sports: “We only played the Italy match because it means extra money for UEFA. Look how the two teams’ formations changed. If the two teams reached the final, other players would have played the match. This reflects how many games we played.”
Courtois, 29, protected Belgium in the European Nations League finals, in which Belgium ranked fourth after losing against France in the semi-finals and falling to Italy in the meeting to determine the third place.
The Real Madrid player continued, “UEFA has launched a new tournament, the Conference League. It’s the same every time, it may bother you that other teams want to create a Super League, but they don’t care about the players. Rather, they are in their pockets, the money.”
“Now you hear about the World Cup and the European Championship every two years. When will we rest? Never. We are not machines! There are too many games, too little rest and no one cares about us. So in the end you find the best players with many injuries.”
He continued, “Next year there is the World Cup in November, we have to play until the end of June again. We will get injured! No one cares about the players.”
The large number of matches that football players are playing now has caused widespread criticism by many coaches, including Jurgen Klopp, coach of Liverpool.
Klopp attacked the idea of holding the World Cup every two years, saying it was about “money”, and defended the players, citing their need for more rest.
FIFA floated the idea of holding the World Cup every two years instead of four, but UEFA opposed it.
