FilGoal | News | Wenger meets with national coaches to discuss holding the World Cup every two years

FIFA has invited world coaches to meet with Arsene Wenger, FIFA’s director of development, to discuss a proposal to hold the World Cup every two years.

The Frenchman will meet with the coaches online on Tuesday and Thursday, and will also discuss with them the amendment of the international calendar, starting from 2024.

Wenger is seeking to convince coaches that holding the World Cup every two years will benefit players and teams.

And that is before FIFA puts the proposal to a vote in December.

The proposal was objected by the European federations “UEFA” and the South American “CONMEBOL”, as well as a number of coaches, including Jurgen Klopp, coach of Liverpool.

Wenger said of the Saudi proposal: “The opinion of the national coach is decisive. We all have to protect the unique position of football in the world and make it truly global.”

Wenger also suggested that transfers of players between clubs should be allowed once a year, rather than twice, as is currently done.

The World Cup has been held every 4 years since its inception in 1930.

The tournament was not played in 1942 and 1946 due to the World War, before it resumed in 1950 and was crowned by Uruguay in Brazil.

The 2022 tournament in Qatar will be the last to witness the participation of 32 teams. In the 2026 edition, which is scheduled to be held in America, Canada and Mexico, 48 teams will participate.
