Here’s what we know so far about the killing of a photographer by a projectile fired by actor Alec Baldwin


A tragic accident on the set of the western movie “Rust”, in New Mexico. Here’s what we know at this time.

According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, they received a call shortly before 2 p.m. local time to go to the set at Bonanza Creek Farm, after police received a report of a shooting at the scene.

Two people were injured when actor and producer Alec Baldwin fired a projectile with a chelated weapon, killing 42-year-old Halina Hutchins. We learned, according to the mayor’s office, that she was flown by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Director Joel Sousa, 48, was also taken by ambulance to a hospital in the area, his condition is unknown at this time. We know that the investigation is still open and active, and we know that the authorities continue to interview the people and witnesses who were there on the set, to find out exactly what happened there, without charges being brought.

A statement was issued by the film’s producing company, and the New York Times quoted it as saying in part, “The cast and entire crew are completely affected by today’s tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Helenas family and loved ones.”

The statement goes on to say that “production has been suspended indefinitely” for the time being, while advising people who were working on this film as they try to move forward.
