An earthquake struck Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, on Friday morning, coinciding with a press conference for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who played down what had happened and continued to answer questions.

The tremor coincided with a press conference by the country’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who spoke about the government’s measures to combat the Corona virus epidemic.

At the moment of the jolt, Ardern held her pulpit but did not interrupt the conference, replying to a correspondence with a smile: “Sorry, this distracted me a little…Can you repeat the question please?”

According to Geonet, the tremor measured 5.9 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was in the center of the North Island of New Zealand.

For its part, the US Geological Survey estimated the strength of the tremor at 5.6, and was felt by residents of the capital, Wellington and nearby areas.

No information was received about the occurrence of destruction or casualties or injuries.
